Whenever a gum infection occurs during pregnancy is left untreated, gum infection can cause harmful effects such as premature labor and low birth weight babies. The effects of increased blood supply and hormones during pregnancy make the gums very soft and spongy and gums easily bleeds during brushing or eating hard food. Food particles can get stuck in between the teeth and gum line and can cause infection. Any infection that includes gum infection is a concern of every pregnant woman. Excessive accumulation of bacteria causes gingivitis and can enter the bloodstream. Bacteria can travel to the uterus and will trigger the production of prostaglandins in which causes uterine contractions and premature labor.
